ADSL Filter

In most cases and normal households, your broadband will be both connected to your internet and your phone line. Initially, this seems like a standard thing and many individuals don’t give it a second thought. However, the way the connections both go down the same cable is actually more complex. If certain instruments were not in place, the phone line would interfere with your internet connection and the whole system wouldn’t work, which is something none of us would put up with.
For those who didn’t know already, yes, both your phone and internet connect through one cable. They share the pins inside and can run parallel to each other without a lot of issues. However, without the addition of ADSL filters, you’re connection would be awful. If you’re not sure what an ADSL filter is and why you need one, we suggest you continue to read this article.

What is an ADSL Filter?

An ADSL filter is a simple tool that allows both your phone line and internet connection to smoothly run through the same cable. Originally, the two connections are not able to use the same pins without the two interfering with one another. However, we a filter, they can coincide without any conflict.
Although some of you might not be familiar with the name, if I were to show you what a filter looks like you would know what I’m talking about. They are those little grey boxes that your phone and internet line go into before they are connected to the broadband line. They can either have one input for the phone/internet or two inputs allowing for both the phone and internet. They are very similar to economizers.
The ADSL filter needs to be set up correctly if you want it to be effective. If you have not set up your phone filter system correctly, you may experience severe internet problems. So when you’re connecting your phone and internet, make sure that the lines are being split.

Having a Faulty ADSL Filter

One of the most common issues when it comes to internet problems is that the ADSL filter is not functioning properly. For most of the time, the filter system is not wired properly. In fact, about 3 weeks ago, I had this problem. My internet failed and it turns out the ADSL filter had broken. Nonetheless, you need to make sure that your ADSL filter is wired to insure there is no interference.
One way to check whether your ADSL filter is broken if through turning off your phone devices to see how the internet reacts. If you turn off all your phone devices and the internet work (as opposed to not working before), then there is some clear interference. Call round your technician to sort out the problem or you can give rewiring a go yourself. All you really need to know is that your phones should all be connected on a filtered line. The computer and modem should not, as they won’t work.

Conclusion

ADSL filters are very important and will insure that your phones and landlines work. Without an ADSL filter, your internet connection will interfere with the phone connection, resulting in severe internet issues. Make sure that you have no problems with the ADSL filter when setting up your broadband and make sure that your internet is not on the filtered line. All phones need to be on the filtered line otherwise problems arise. It is as basic as that.
