DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MULTIMODE FIBRE OPTIC CABLES: OM1 CABLE, OM2 CABLE, OM3 CABLE AND OM4 CABLE

  • OM1 (62.5 / 125μm) Patch Cords are manufactures using Low Smoke Zero Halogen Cables with 62.5µm core and 125µm cladding.
  • OM2 50/125 fiber cable is designed to carry 1 Gigabit Ethernet up to 550 mt
  • OM3 50/125 fibre optic cable is high quality fiber suitable for transmissions with Laser VCSEL which can carry 10Gb Ethernet up to 300 mtr.
  • OM4 fiber cable is of the highest quality suitable to carry the 40Gb Ethernet up to 150 meters and it can carry 10 Gb Ethernet up to 550 metres.

Fibre Optic Multimode cable is 50/125 and 62.5/125 in construction. This means that the core to cladding diameter ratio is 50 microns to 125 microns and 62.5 microns to 125 microns. Multimode fibre optic cable is typically used for short distance, data and audio/video applications in LANs.
Fibre optic ethernet cables are available in Multimode (OM1,OM2,OM3 and OM4) or Singlemode(OS1/OS2) for next day delivery.
Singlemode cables are 9/125 in construction, so the core to cladding diameter ratio is 9 microns to 125 microns. Singlemode fibre optic cable is typically used in long distance
The second edition of the ISO 11801 standard redefines the types of multimode fiber by identifying four degrees: OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4.
